TFT Family Swimming Party after school on Friday at Mt. Scott from 1-3, suggested donation of $1 each. This is *NOT* a class field trip! This is for families to attend on their own after school hours.

The sharing topic for tomorrow is something old. Each student can define "old" for themselves.

Picture days are Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. We're not sure what day is ours just yet.

Spirit Week is March 15 - 19. There are different themes for each day all week.

Tomorrow there is an all school meeting. Jackie Bartlett, a preschool teacher, would like to use some wall space in the lobby to display some of the preschoolers' art work. Lots of students in Whitney's class have siblings in the preschool.

One of the students in the school lost her diabetic testing kit. It is a little black case, kind of like a camera case. If you find it, please bring it to the front desk.

The four-square square right outside of Rob's room has caused lots of noise for Rob's class, including balls hitting his garage door. Please don't use that square for awhile. Making a new square would be a good all school meeting proposal.

It is okay to bring an IPOD to school, and listen to it only during recess. No handheld games may be played at school (this is an all school rule). Students have lost IPOD's at school, so it may not be the best idea to bring your IPOD to school.

Gigi announced that today is Eco Club, indoors during the lunch recess. This is a club where students will do things to try to help save the planet, like making signs, or maybe arranging a day later in the year to go pick up trash.

Sharing For Friday

Hi all!

Just wanted to inform everyone that the class voted on a sharing theme for this Friday. The theme of "Something Old" was chosen. As with every theme, the rules are open to how students interpret the topic. That could mean something old as in something the student has had for some time, something old as in its been a part of their family unit for a time, or something old as in old/ancient in terms of our world. Thanks!

We are having a cover contest for the yearbook. If you want to submit a possible cover, put it on a white piece of paper, and attach a cover with your name and Whitney's name. They would like some color, and would like it to say Trillium Charter School 2009-2010.

March 15-19 is Spirit Week. Each day there will be a different dress-up option. There will be signs up soon about what each day's theme is, so watch for those signs!

Next week, picture days will be Tuesday and Wednesday. We will have more details soon.

We have not had our typical sharing in awhile. So, this Friday we will have sharing. The class will choose a sharing theme later today.

Today the class is going to write a letter to the 3-4-5's asking them to be more careful about running in the hallways. Our class will learn about the proper format for writing a letter, and hopefully work out their problem, too!

Today is origami day and bakugan day.

Friday from 1-3 is the TFT swimming party at Mt. Scott.

Pet Day!!

Marley brought her Lhasa Apsa Tibetan Mountain dog named: Boo. She had a little outfit on that Marley made out of felt. It is the only outfit she will wear! Marley got a sewing kit from her grandmother for her birthday, and used it to make the outfit. Boo's dad's name was Good Time Charlie. Her birthday is January 18, and she just turned two.

Joshua shared his dog Noah. Noah is a 10 year old huge yellow lab mix. He weighs over 100 pounds. Some kids fed Noah treats and gave him some nice pets and attention. Josh's parents had Noah before they had Josh. He likes hard toys because he rips up soft toys. He likes to play tug-o-war, too.

Thalia brought her dog Zeus, who is 1/2 lab and 1/2 border collie. He is about 12 or 13 years old, which is about 84 years in human years. Thalia and Clio dress him up all the time, and put ribbons on him. He is not very fond of playing fetch. He chases things and then stops and chews them, rather than bringing them back. He likes to shepherd his people, and keep the "pack" together. He also likes to bark, and he is afraid of computers!

Gigi brought Lucy, her dog. Lucy is a mix with some Australian Shepherd. Lucy is one year old. She sleeps in Gigi's parents' bed. She likes to jump on Gigi in the morning and wake her up. Lucy can stand and walk on her hind legs. She stood on her hind legs to get a peanut! The kids took turns petting Lucy.

Simon brought his dog Sunday, who is 13 years old. That is about 91 in people years. Sunday is a pug. Pugs first originated in China. Napoleon and Josephine had pugs, too. Sunday loves food, and will do anything for food. She sleeps on the couch or in a dog bed. She had a dream last night and was running and barking in her sleep!

Emmy brought her pet black mouse Bernard. Emmy's sister Harmony named Bernard. Emmy has only had him for two days. Emmy's family bought Bernard at a pet store. They bought him as food for Harmony's snake, but he escaped in the car. He lived in the car for FIVE days (they thought he had run away out of the car). Since he lived that long in the car, they decided to keep him as a pet. The kids took turns holding Bernard.

Moses brought his fire-belly toad named Fireball. Moses has had him for three or four months. He is awake during the day. He eats crickets. A fire-belly toad is the third most poisonous toad in the world. Fireball only has one eye, due to a birth defect. One side of fireball is orange and black, and the other side is green and black. Moses and Simon fed live crickets to Fireball.

Ava brought her pet fish, Goldie and Ruby. They are really fast swimmers. Ava got them out of their tank with some help from her mom. She originally got them from the pet store. She used to have fish that fought each other, but these fish don't do that.

Jackson brought a green hamster gobbin that does tricks. He keeps it in a fort in his room. He also has a pet hamster at home named Hermes. Hermes is really cute. He is nocturnal, though, so Jackson doesn't get to play with him much.

Thanks to all the parents who helped make Pet Day so much fun!!

A Discussion We Had Today

Hi all. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up regarding a discussion we had in class today with Trillium's Executive Director, Stephanie Hinkle. As many know, one of our students lost their father over the past weekend. The student chose to share this information with many classmates. This was an absolutely remarkable act of courage and strength on behalf of this student. As you can probably guess, some students had a hard time processing such a difficult subject. So in response, Stephanie chose to come in discuss this issue with our class. I really commend the talk she had with our kids. One of her key points was that if such talk of passing keys any anxiety or fears, that that student should really talk with their parents about it. The kids handled the discussion really well and had a lot of questions and strong input. I wanted to bring this to all of your attention in case any kids were coming home with questions, concerns, or worries. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please feel free to contact me.

Trillium Basket Raffle - We Need Your Help!

The Trillium Basket Raffle is set for Friday May 7th! This raffle is a major fundraiser for the school, and we would really appreciate having everyone's help. The K-1-2 is doing an "Alternative Transportation" basket. (Please note that "basket" is just a term for "lots of stuff with a common theme" - the items do not have to fit into a basket). We are hoping that every K-1-2 family will contribute to the basket. You can contribute money ($10 - $15?), any item that goes with the theme (a bike, safety gear, trimet passes, gift cards to bike or outdoor shops, etc.), your time or skills (bike maintenance? riding lessons? safety lessons? group bike tour? etc.), or you can solicit donations for the basket from area businesses (there is a tax-exempt form that you can take with you when you seek donations). If you have a connection that can help us get a larger donation, please let me know.

*All donations need to be received by Wednesday March 10th.*

We will begin selling raffle tickets immediately after spring break. Please let me know if you have any questions. Leigh Ann

Jackson announced that the Winter Olympics start today!

Moses can't wait to begin Valentine's Day!

The Blue Whale and the Sperm Whale are two of the whales they learned about yesterday. The Blue Whale is the biggest mammal on earth. Gigi thinks that Sperm Whales eat Giant Squid, and Giant Squid eat Sperm Whales. That is a fact they can check into. Moses remembered that whales are big but they eat lots of small things like plankton. Thalia remembered that Blue Whales can live up to 80 years, and Sperm Whales can live up to 70 years. Luna remembered that Sperm Whales and Blue Whales give birth to only one baby whale.

The class read some more of their ocean book.

The class talked about what they've learned about oceans. Thalia remembered about Atlantis, and that part of the ocean is two miles deep. Moses remembered that the islands are volcanoes, and also about a crater that it would take seven hours to get down to the bottom of. Simon remembered that gravity makes the tides. Jackson remembered that the Great Barrier Reef is lots of reefs put together. Ivon already knew about the great crater in the water because of a movie.

Yesterday the class learned that Islands are big mountains that come from the bottom of the sea. The ocean is two miles deep in some spots. If you put all the land in the world together it would fit inside the Pacific Ocean.

Friday is Wheel Day! It is supposed to rain. Whitney suggested that we go ahead with wheel day, and he will try to find a break in the weather during the day. If there is no good time during the day, we will postpone it. Wheel day is optional - if you don't want to bring anything with wheels, there will be other things to do instead.

Friday is also Valentine's Day and Valentina's birthday! If the students want to bring in Valentines, there is a list of classmates in the take home folders. Please no candy, unless you already bought it. If you do bring candy, we will ask that the students eat it at home.

Pet Day is next Friday the 19th. Please see Whitney's post below for details.

Lots of the students said that they are making their own Valentine cards.

Proposals Passed Last Friday

Hi all! Hope you had a good weekend. Was quite The Super Bowl.

Wanted to inform you all about two proposals that were passed during our Class Meeting on Friday:

#1). This Friday the 12th, we will be having another Wheel Day. We've had a few in the past and they've been quite successful. For Wheel Day, each student has the option to bring any (non-motorized) wheeled piece of transportation (bikes, scooters, skates, rollerblades, skateboards, etc.). We will take a roughly 20 minute break from our day to head to the park and get some exercise. Students who participate must bring a helmet and there will be no switching of gear. The kids understand that we ride on the park paths and never go on the sidewalk along Interstate Ave. Should be fun.

#2). The following Friday (the 19th) will be Pet Day. This will be our sharing for the week. It will occur around 8:45 and pets should not stay for the day. Exceptions can be made for well behaved small animals. I made an amendment to the proposal that each student must check in with me beforehand regarding which pet and how many they are bringing in. Beth's class did this last Friday and it was a hit. I would appreciate that parents stick around while the pet sharing is happening and then take their pets with them if possible. We seem to be OK with allergies, but any students who are not comfortable will be able to work on reading programs across the hallway in the computer lab.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding these two passed proposals, please let me know. Thanks and I'm looking forward to a great week!

Best,
Whitney

Whitney and some of the other students want to go to the meeting to ask some questions about the proposal. Whitney encouraged all of the students to go to the meeting and be involved.
