Moving Up Ceremony

For those who can make it, we will be having a Moving Up Ceremony tomorrow at 11:00 followed by some play time at the park. Originally I had planned to have a sleep over tonight at the school, but I just wasn't able to get everything organized in time. I apologize for this. I am going to try and coordinate something next week or the night before the official last day of school.

Reminder About Tomorrow Night

Dear Families,

The End Of The Year

Hi all-

I am very saddened to say that due to my upcoming endeavors in school that I will be missing our final seven days school. I feel absolutely awful about this. We have a sub set up for all of those days and I will be working closely with her to make sure the end of the year is rewarding for our students. With that in mind, I would like to have our Moving Up Ceremony on Friday June 10th, my unofficial last day at Trillium. More details regarding The Ceremony will come shortly. Mitchel passed a proposal to have a sleep over at the school before the year's end. It is my hope that we can honor this with a sleep over on Thursday June 9th to lead into our Moving Up Ceremony. This is quite an undertaking and I am reaching out to all of your for help and guidance in making this a wonderful event. We will need chaperones (both overnight and just to help out before the kids hit the rack), help with food, and help with coordinating activities. I have done this in this past and it has been an incredible experience. If you are able to pitch in, please let me know. Once again, I am very sorry for the early departure. Thanks for the wonderful year.

Dear Trillium Community-

It is with a very heavy heart that I am letting you all know that I will not be returning to Trillium next year. Although I am leaving Trillium I am not leaving the field of education. I am enrolling in a Masters program here in Portland and am excited about growing as a teacher. This has been a very difficult choice as I cannot overstate how wonderful and inspiring this year's class has been. To see this year's second graders come into their own after being with them for three school years has been truly amazing. It breaks my heart that I will not be with our first graders as they continue their educational journey next year.
Finally, I want to thank all of you for your support, for creating such a wonderful community at Trillium, and for sending the absolute greatest kids to our school. I know I will always look back at the last four years as some of the best of my life. I will miss my time with your students greatly.

I propose an all school talent show like we used to have in coordination with the Trillium Record release party. My mom has talked to Kirk who has had past experience with Trillium talent shows and he says he will help out with it. My mom will also help out with organizing. Some possible dates that don't have anything else on the calendar are the 8th or 9th of June. It would be from 5:30 till 8 p.m. in the courtyard. We shall have a sign up sheet in the common space for the talent show. There will be room for 24 people. We will have auditions (to check for appropriateness) on Tuesday, May 31st directly after school. We will put together a committee of staff, parents and kids (by sign-up) to organize the event, oversee auditions etc. This committee will decide whether to have a cash donation box and/or canned food donation box. Parents will be encouraged to attend. There is no required fee for attendance. No food will be provided.

No More School Snack

Hi everyone,

I'm coming with bad news that we will no longer be distributing a school snack for the rest of the year. As you know, our budget has been pretty thin this year and Trillium has had to make some major changes. For the past couple months I've been paying for snack out of my own pocket and I just can't do it any longer. It kills me to do so. Please remember that school lunches are free from now until the end of the year and students are always welcome to seconds. If anyone feels up to donating a bag of pretzels, then I can continue to do school snack, but as of tomorrow snacks should come from home. I apologize for this.

Changes In Lunch Program

Hopefully you received this e-mail already. I thought I republished it on this blog, but I guess I did not.

Dear Trillium Families,

We have been working hard this year to get an amazing lunch program that serves hot, healthy food and pays for itself. Beth and Elizabeth have been dedicated and have work so hard. The trick is with the amount of reporting and compliance involved with being a National School Lunch Program with federal guidelines there is an incredible amount of labor that is required for the program. Try as hard as we have, we have not found a way to make it economically viable at this time.

We do believe in providing healthy lunch so after much number crunching and brainstorming we have come up with a option we feel will meet Trillium's needs. We will no longer be participating in the National School Lunch Program. We will have a morning snack and lunch to those who need it. It won't be fancy, but it will be FREE! It sounds crazy, but it actually will cost Trillium less money to offer a simple free lunch choice that requires minimal preparation and no administration. The preparation will be done by volunteers (let us know if you are interested in helping!) with the free Dave's Killer Bread we get on weekly basis.

If you are in need of a breakfast - think granola bar or a bagel and a piece of fruit in the morning. Or a PB&J, milk, and a piece of fruit for lunch there will be food available. Breakfast will be served Monday-Friday and Lunch will be served Monday-Thursday. We won't be charging for these options, however donations will be accepted to keep the food cost down. These changes will start on Monday, April 25th.

Auction Tickets On Sale

Dear Trillium Families,

The Auction is a week from Saturday! You can purchase tickets in the lobby before and after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and after school on Friday this week. Run For The Arts

Parents,

Tomorrow, Friday, April 22, is our Run for the Arts and Earth Day parade to the Jefferson High School track, 5210 N Kerby Ave. Portland, OR 97217, where we will have the run. The parade will leave Trillium at 10:30 and the route will be along Killingsworth Avenue. Earth Day costumes, posters and banners are encouraged. Each advising group will have a staging area at the track where belongings can be kept.

The run will begin at about 11:00am and end at 11:30am. Then classes will walk back to Trillium. You are welcome to join us for the parade and the run. You are also welcome to pick up your child(ren) at Jefferson High School's track after the run but you must make sure that your child's advisor knows that you are taking them.

The weather is supposed to be sunny tomorrow, so please consider sending sun screen and water bottles for the parade and run. We will probably be in the sun for 90 minutes.

Run for the Arts money needs to be collected from the sponsors next week and returned to your child's advisor. Checks should be made out to "Run for the Arts". If your child collects cash, you can bring in the cash or write a check for the amount. Monday, May 2 will be the last day to collect mone to count toward any of the prizes.

Important Message

Dear Trillium Community,

We were informed at the end of business day on Friday that we must temporarily suspend classes and we may not use the building because our property and liability insurance was canceled. The cancellation is due to our account history that occurred as a result of our financial struggles over the past few years. Thankfully, we are making great strides, but work on our transition to financial stability is still a real issue.

We are actively communicating with our insurance broker to reinstate our insurance policy as soon as possible. This suspension of classes, which impacts all grade levels and preschool, will begin Monday, 4/10. This means there will be NO SCHOOL, nor will be there anyone in the building.

Our hope is that this issue can be resolved sooner, but we must plan for a 2 week suspension of classes and building use.

We understand this is an unexpected announcement and that it will be challenging. Thankfully, Trillium is a strong community and we will work through this together. We will communicate via email to update you daily and as we have new information about insurance reinstatement. We know you have questions and we will do our best to answer them. In addition to the email we will contact parents on the phone, creating a blog specific to this suspension of classes to better update and connect online.

This Tuesday at 6:30pm we will be holding an ALL COMMUNITY MEETING location TBA. The Board, Genevieve, many Staff members, and TFT will be available at 6:30pm to answer questions and connect about working together.

We ask that parents please email your student's adviser to let them know you have received this message and understand that classes will not be held beginning Monday. Adviser emails are listed below.

Fellow Parents and Trillium Community:

You have probably received the letter from Genevieve regarding the fund-raising auction that is coming in May. She was right when she said that this is our "All Hands On Deck" moment.

This auction will be an opportunity for us to stretch outside the Trillium community and increase the depth of our fund-raising. Imagine what would happen if people from all over Portland -- not just parents -- were vested in the success of our scrappy little school. Imagine a one-night event that added $20,000, $30,000 or even $40,000 to the coffers of the school. Even more.

This level of support cannot happen from the pockets of us parents alone. It can only happen, as Genevieve said in her letter, through the of sweat equity that you and I are willing to supply.

I am hoping that each of you will look around you and find ways to contribute to the auction. Can you volunteer? Can you encourage network of friends and co-workers to come? Can you put up a poster at work or obtain that special item for the auction? Can you sell tickets? There are a hundred ways to contribute. You just have to do it.

State of our School Community Forum
Wednesday, March 16th from 6:30-8:00

Please join us on March 16th from 6:30-8:00 for an update of the financial status of Trillium as well as a facilitated break out sessions for your input.

As part of our strategic planning work, we will be conducting an online survey that will go in the next few days. We will follow it up with this community night that will include a State of the School speech to inform all of Trillium’s financial situation and small breakout groups to get direct community feedback. The underlying objective of the meeting is to inform everyone about the work that lies ahead for Trillium and how we can together to successfully move us forward.

Spring Break is coming up in just a little over two weeks. Please remember that unlike most schools we actually have two weeks off. There is potentially going to be camp/day care at Trillium for the second week of the break. Here are the details:
Trillium Aftercare is going to have a day camp during the second week of Spring break. If you need a place for your child to spend the day, consider having your 1st-5th grade child join us for a fun filled day at camp. Our camp will run from 9:00 am to 6:00pm (normal late fees apply after 6:00 pm) We will going on a field trips (weather depending), doing arts and crafts and playing group games. The cost is $25 a day for enrolled aftercare students and $40 a day for all other students. Please email our aftercare teacher Marc Molenkamp before March 15th to secure a spot. marc@trilliumcharterschool.org We do need a certain amount of kids to be open these days, so if you do need care act fast.

Guide Lines For Pet Day This Friday

Hi Everyone!

The class recently passed a proposal to have Pet Day as our show and tell for this upcoming Friday the 25th. We decided that if you have a pet that is not suitable for the classroom environment or if its a pet you no longer have, it is perfectly fine to bring in a picture of the pet.

If you would like to bring in a current pet, please check in with me prior to bringing the pet in. I am really excited to have some cats, dogs, etc. for us to share in person. We will begin sharing at around 8:40 that morning. If you could stick around to help with the sharing, I would really appreciate it. Smaller pets can stay with us until the end of the early day, but its preferable if they can return home with you in the morning.

We are currently working on our dinosaur masks for next week's project fair. Any help we can get on this from parents would be great. Its pretty difficult work and the kids need some assistance. Let me know if you are able to come in and help tomorrow or any day next week. Thanks!

The Pizzicato Dough For Dollars Event is Tuesday February 1st. Trillium will receive 20% of all sales at the Fremont Street location that day. You can come in and eat pizza, take-out, or have pizza delivered (within a 2 mile radius of the store).

You can also support Trillium by pre-ordering par-baked pizzas, appetizers, salads, and gift cards ($20 denominations). Twenty Percent of those sales will also go to Trillium. The food and gift cards will be available for pick-up at Trillium at 3:00 on Tuesday February 1.

We will be taking pre-orders beginning Wednesday January 18. You can fill out the attached order form or pick up a hard copy in the lobby before or after school. You must pay when you order(Checks go to Trillium Charter School.) All orders must be received no later than Thursday January 27th. They can be dropped off in the lobby before or after school, or dropped in the silver SCRIP box in the lobby.

A proposal was passed that we will have a class magic show Friday January 28th. Students can prepare a magic show and present it to the class on that day.
